A new gecko species have been discovered in Attappadi, Palakkad, under the leadership of zoologist Sandeep Das. It’s the genus Hemidactylus, a lizard common in our homes. So far, nine such gecko species have been reported in Kerala. Given the scientific name Hemidactylus easai, its common name is Easa’s rock gecko.

The new gecko species is named in honour of Dr P.S. Easa,  former head of the Kerala Forest Research Institute. He is also the Chairman of the Aranyakam Nature Foundation. Easa’s rock gecko was found in the rain shadow areas of Attappadi hills in the Palakkad district. They can be seen on the rocks near Bhavanipuzha and the walls of houses in the surrounding residential areas.

In Kerala, rain shadow regions are found in places like Chinnar, but Easa’s rock gecko is now found only north of the Palakkad gap in the Western Ghats. More than 180 species of the Hemidactylus genus have been identified worldwide. There are 49 species in India and eight species in Kerala. However, experts say more of these are likely to be found in areas near Attappady, which will require more surveys. The Easa’s rock gecko measures 105 mm from snout to vent (10.5 cm), about twice the size of a common house gecko and is a light brown to grey in colour.

The gecko was found in June 2020 in the Attappadi region. Subsequently, studies were conducted on genetics and morphology. The team submitted a report of its findings to Vertebrate Zoology in October 2021. The report was published in February 2022.
